Swede	May-June	Nov-Mar	Cabbage fruit fly, clubroot	Slow growing and hardy. Use general fertiliser a few days before sowing 2cms deep in rows, thin out to 25cms apart. Do not like being transplanted. Keep moist to stop from splitting.
Sweetcorn	Sow: April Plant out: May	Harvest when tassels turn brown		Plant several seeds in pots in compost 2.5cms deep. Thin out leaving only strongest when 2cms tall. Before planting out, use general fertiliser on ground. Plant out in blocks. Keep well watered and weed free.
Tomato	Green house: Feb-Mar Outdoors: April-May	When fruit ripe and coloured		There are so many varieties to choose from. Sow seeds in compost in pots. When 5cms high, plant out into individual pots. When 15cms high plant into growbags, containers or raised beds. If planting in soil mix in organic matter. Support with stakes. Tomato plants require full sun. Keep moist or fruit may split. Water with liquid tomato feed when flowers appear.
Turnip	Under cloches: early Feb Main crop: Jul -Aug	Early : May -Sept Main crop: Oct onwards		Thin out until they are 15cm apart for early crops, or 23cm apart for main crop. Water during dry weather to prevent roots growing small and woody.

Parsnip	Feb-Apr	Oct - Jan Best when frosted		East to grow, long growing season. Like rich soil but not stony soil as this causes misshapen roots. Do not like very acidic soil. Sow 2cms deep in rows 30cms apart. This to 8cms apart when a few cms high. Make sure watered while especially when germinating.
Pea	Mar	Jun onwards depending on variety. Harvest often from bottom of plant	Pea aphids, pea weevils.	Sow into warm, well composted soil. Like a sunny location. Dig trench 5cms deep, 10cms wide and water, then sow seeds in trench in three rows about 5 cms apart. Grow tall and will need supports. When harvesting over leave roots in ground to rot as full of nitrogen and nutrients.
Pepper	Apr	Jul-Sep	Aphids, cutworm, leaf miner	Plant seed in compost filled pot, water well and cover with polythene to keep warm and moist. Remove cover when germinating begins, when 3cms tall pot on. Will need cane support. When 30cms tall pinch out growing shoots to help turn into a bush shape. Around May plant out into final sunny location. Like a lot of water. When fruit appears feed with tomato feed.
Potato	Mar-Apr	Jun-Sep	Blight, blackleg, Scab, Slugs	Many varieties to choose from. Place in container end up to encourage shoots to appear a few weeks before planting. Carefully (to avoid damaging shoots) plant out into 10cms deep trench when shoots 2cms long. Plant about 30cms apart. As shoot appear earth up row to cover shoots. Continue doing this as they grow Ideal for containers.
Radish	Under cloche: Mar Otherwise Apr	5 weeks after sowing	Slugs	Lots of varieties, like sun but inclined to bolt if too hot. Can be container grown in loam compost.

Plant crowns 75cms apart just under the surface. After leaves die spread manure round base. Remove flowers before they open. Force if required by covering whole plant to keep light out.

Herb - Dill	March - April in green house	Whenever leaves look ready throughout the summer		Best grown from seed in ground or large pots as does not like being transplanted. Like sun but does not like wind,] or too much water.
Herb - Oregano	Inside: March Outside: April	July onwards before flowers. Pick sprigs as needed - can be dried for later use	Cabbage white butterfly	Likes sunny well drained position but keep watered until established. Sow 2cm deep 15cm apart and thin out as grow.

Herb - Rosemary	April	When required		Best buy as seedlings. Prefers light sandy soil, lives a long time. Keep lightly watered until established Prune in the autumn. Can grow tall with long roots.
Herb - Sage		Best used fresh but can be frozen		Best buy as seedling. Likes lots of sun grown in organic matter. Prune in autumn.
Herb - Thyme	From seed: March	Best in June - July		Best buy plant as can take a long time for plant to grow ready for harvesting. Needs lots of light in a well drained soil. Looks after itself
Leeks	April	August onwards throughout the winter		Sow seed thinly about 5mm deep in rows 30cms apart and water lightly. Prefer old manured soil not fresh or taste will be bitter. Thin out to 5cms apart. When 8cms high plant out into wet soil. Make sure well watered and apply a liquid feed.

Leave 15cms between rows. As they grow thin out until 7.5cms apart. When they have 5-6 leaves plant out to their final position planting slightly deeper in rows about 30cms apart with 30cms between rows.
Cabbage Winter (Savoy)	May to July	November to March	Cabbage Root Fly, Clubroot, Cabbage Moth & White Butterfly, Cabbage Whitefly, Pigeons	Likes well drained soil, but not rich. Fork in a fertiliser of potash. Sow three or four seeds 60cms apart. Some say has a better flavour after being frosted.
Carrot	March	June to July	Carrot fly	Best in sunny position in light sandy soil, not in freshly manured soil. This causes misshapen roots. Apply light dressing of general fertiliser 10 days before sowing. Sow in drills 2-3cms deep and 25cms apart. Once germinated thin out to 5cms apart. Cover carrot tops as they grow to avoid green tops.
Cauliflower	Under glass Jan - Mar, Outdoors April - May	August	Clubroot, Cabbage Root Fly, Cabbage Gall Weevil.	Like rich loamy soil. Sow seed 5mm deep in a drill. Keep moist and thin to 5cms apart as they grow. When 4cms high plant out 60cms apart. If outer leaves do not fold over cover the head (curd) by breaking the outer leaves and cover the head as this prevents the sun from turning them brown.
Celery	Under glass Mar, sow out May	August - September	Carrot fly, Celery fly, Slugs, Snails	Like rich soil in an open location. Before planting dig the soil and dig in compost or well rotted manure. Plant out in trenches 25cms apart. Make sure the crown is at ground level. Keep well watered.
Courgette	Sow in pots under glass April, plant out June		Aphids, slugs, red spider mite.	Equally at home in pots, grow bags or soil. Harvest when the courgettes are 10cms long.
Cucumber	May	August	Greenfly, Whitefly, snail, slug, red spider mite	There are many varieties. Sow in pots, lay seeds on their sides. They must be kept wet or germination may not occur. In May when the plants have four leaves plant out into soil or grow bags. Because of the weight of the cucumbers these plants will need support throughout. Need plenty of watering.
Garlic	October	August	Nematode, thrip, onion maggot	Need to be in full sun to grow quickly. Plant 2.5cm deep. Plant the cloves upright about 10cms apart. Harvest when the leaves start to change colour. Do not leave in the ground as they may rot. Use garlic fresh, it has a better taste and smells less.

Artichoke (Globe)	April		Aphid, Slugs	Like an open sunny position in well manured soil. These plants are perennials. Protect from frost by covering with straw. Feed with liquid manure and mulch to keep moist. It is normal practice to remove the buds in the first year.
Asparagus	April	June (short season)	Asparagus beetle, Slugs	These plants (crowns) are perennials. Like well drained manured soil in a sheltered but sunny position. At end of the year cut down to 5cm and mulch with manure or compost. Do not harvest in the first year, some leave for two years. Harvest when about 15cms tall and cut below soil level.
Aubergine (Egg Plant)	April under glass	Late August	Aphid, Red Spider Mite, 　White fly	Plant in pots and place outside in May. Avoid windy location. Stake plants if required. Pinch out tops when 40cms high to encourage plant to bush. When fruits form feed once a week using tomato feed.
Beans Broad	March (seeds)		Aphid, Bean Seed Fly, 　Bean Weevil	Like damp manured ground. Fertilise ground a week before sowing. 　Sow in twin rows 20cms apart in shallow 7.5cm deep trench with 65cms between each twin row.
Beans Dwarf - French	May	August	Aphid, Bean Seed Fly, 　Bean Weevil	Sow seeds 10cms apart in rows. Rows should be up to 45cms apart. Plant seeds 5cms deep. When flowers appear 　feed once a week. Harvest pods while young, this improves plant yield. Cover with glass if the temperature is likely to be below 10C. Warning. Raw pods or beans are poisonous. The toxins are destroyed by cooking.
Beans - Runner	April (in pots in green house or under cloches or outside late May)		Aphid, Bean Seed Fly, 　Bean Weevil	Should be planted in well dug and manured soil. Plants can be grown up poles, canes or through trellis and nets. The seeds should be 7.5cms deep and 15cms apart. Pinch out the tips of shoots when 45cms high. Liquid feed regularly and water in dry weather. Ensure no pods turn to seed.
Beetroot	May to June (after frosts)		White Grubs	Should not be grown in freshly manured soil. This causes misshapen roots. Sow in shallow drills 2.5cms deep and 30cms apart.
Broccoli	Seed late April to May	Next February 　to May	Aphid, Clubroot, Cabbage Root Fly, Caterpillars	Like firm well drained soil. A few days before sowing apply a general fertiliser. Do not plant too close together as they will grow quite large, they need to be 50cms apart. In dry weather water well. Pick from the centre to encourage side shoots to prolong cropping.
Brussels Sprouts	In beds March to April. Plant out in late May to June.	October to March	Aphid, Clubroot	Like firm non-manured ground. Sow thinly 1cm deep, spacing them 60cms apart and 60cms between rows. Water well after transplanting and in dry weather. Take dead leaves off and leave on ground for mulch. Plants inclined to be fragile so stake if required.
