If melting ice on paths or drives use plant friendly materials. Now is the time to send equipment such as lawn mowers away for repair or service.

Check your garden structures such as arches and pergolas, make sure they can withstand the ravages of winter and repair if necessary. Browse the catalogues and order your seeds.

Heavy snow can break branches so be ready to remove if possible from weighed down branches. Collect and compost leaves especially from areas under shrubs where slugs can congregate.

Make sure roses and other similar plants are secure against winter gales. If possible fork over soil between shrubs and remove any weeds. Dig heavy soil so that frost can break it down. If the winter is mild you can plant lilies now. Cut back perennials. If you want you can move shrubs and divide perennials now.

Aerate as required. Keep clear of wind blown leaves and compost the leaves. Keep off frozen lawns or damage may result. Spread earth from worm casts.

Protect ponds from ice. Fish may need the occasional feed but if it is very cold you may not see them. Netting may help to keep leaves out.

If you can bear the cold clean your greenhouse glass to let more light in. Clear gutters as well and make sure down pipes are clear and that water butts are functional. Sow Pelargonium, Begonia and Lobelia

If you intend to plant rhubarb outside then do it now. Cover with manure then cover with pots or boxes to encourage growth. Dig over bare patches in your vegetable garden. Frosts will help break down the soil.

During winter months most houses are too dry for house plants. Increase humidity by placing plants on trays lined with pebbles and filled with water but do not over water. Keep them warm too and make sure they get enough light during the short days.
