Many types, dwarf to climber. Sow seed in compost on its side in large pot 2.5cms deep, keep warm. May to Jun plant out into growbags, large container or well manured soil.

 

Keep moist, mulching helps. Harvest several times per week to keep plant productive.

Grown from sets. Prepare soil with general purpose fertiliser. Plant into soil with tops just visible 20cms apart.

Sow under glass then plant into growbag or sow directly into growbag.

East to grow, long growing season. Like rich soil but not stony soil as this causes misshapen roots. Do not like very acidic soil.

Sow 2cms deep in rows 30cms apart. This to 8cms apart when a few cms high. Make sure watered while especially when germinating.

Pea

Harvest often from bottom of plant

Pea aphids, pea weevils.

Sow into warm, well composted soil. Like a sunny location. Dig trench 5cms deep, 10cms wide and water, then sow seeds in trench in three rows about 5 cms apart.

Grow tall and will need supports.

When harvesting over leave roots in ground to rot as full of nitrogen and nutrients.

Pepper

Plant seed in compost filled pot, water well and cover with polythene to keep warm and moist. Remove cover when germinating begins, when 3cms tall pot on. Will need cane support. When 30cms tall pinch out growing shoots to help turn into a bush shape. Around May plant out into final sunny location. Like a lot of water. When fruit appears feed with tomato feed.

Many varieties to choose from. Place in container end up to encourage shoots to appear a few weeks before planting. Carefully (to avoid damaging shoots) plant out into 10cms deep trench when shoots 2cms long. Plant about 30cms apart. As shoot appear earth up row to cover shoots. Continue doing this as they grow

Lots of varieties, like sun but inclined to bolt if too hot. Can be container grown in loam compost.

Rhubarb

Harvest stems May-Aug but not in first year

Crown rot and fungal infection if too wet

Grow from crowns. Likes well drained shady position in well rotted manured soil. Plant crowns 75cms apart just under the surface.

After leaves die spread manure round base. Remove flowers before they open.

Force if required by covering whole plant to keep light out.
